Give the accelerator a brake

Winter is coming, and yet weekly statistics show that motorists continue to throw caution, and the safety of others, to the wind. 

In the past week, the City's enforcement agencies made 408 arrests and issued 60 889 fines for various transgressions.

Traffic officers recorded 54 043 violations – 31 773 of those for speeding, impounded 266 vehicles and executed 889 warrants of arrest.

They also arrested 75 motorists, including 58 for drunk driving, eight for reckless and negligent driving, and nine others for various other transgressions.

The previous week, the arrests tally was 36, with 28 motorists arrested for driving under the influence.

'Drunk driving arrests doubled week on week, and again, we had well over 50 000 traffic transgressions recorded. Speeding, or driving impaired is fine, until you crash and hurt yourself, or even worse, someone else. Driving is challenging enough in good weather conditions – with the change of seasons, conditions are becoming even more challenging, and so the message to our motoring public is to give that accelerator a break, drive with headlights on at all times, be patient and courteous, and most importantly, steer clear of the bar,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Law Enforcement officers made 263 arrests and issued 4 133 notices.

• Metro Police officers made 70 arrests and issued 2 713 fines.
  
   
  The Public Emergency Communication Centre had a slightly quieter weekend, recording 1 794 incidents, of which 739 were medical complaints.
  
  
  The centre also recorded 53 fires, down from 78 the weekend before, 115 assault cases compared to 187, 54 domestic violence incidents (48), 72 road accidents (68) and 218 noise nuisance complaints (272).
